Gwendolyn "Gwen" Hollingsworth, 85, formerly of 111 West 4th Street in Boone, currently of 9738 Clark Street in Clive, passed away at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines on Monday morning, September 8, 2008.
Gwendolyn was born April 14, 1923 in Garden Township rural Madrid, Iowa the daughter of Glenn and Grace (Mondt) Mayer.
She graduated from Luther High School and went on to school at AIB in Des Moines.
Gwendolyn was a mother, homemaker and was employed as a secretary at Iowa State University and later for the Traveler's Insurance Agency in Boone during her lifetime. She enjoyed her retirement years when the couple moved to the West Haven Apartments. Gwendolyn recently moved to Manor Care in West Des Moines.
She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church, teaching many Sunday School classes and assisting with Pioneer Girls.
In her free time, she enjoyed playing Skip-Bo and other games with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.
Her parents and husband Walter, in April of this year, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her children Dewell (Maureen) Hollingsworth of Boone, Devon (Carol) Hollingsworth of Dekalb, Illinois, and Cheryl (Elias) Devoto of Clive, Iowa; 9 grandchildren Liesl (Brian) Roorda, Britta (Kirk) Dimler, Kirk (Teresa) Hollingsworth, Jennifer Hollingsworth, Mark Hollingsworth, Roxanne (BJ) Lodge, Karl (Melissa) Devoto, Maritza Devoto, and Nicolle Devoto; 19 great-grandchildren, Spencer, Sidney, Waverly, and Isabella Roorda; Konnor, Kadyn and Kelby Dimler; Zachary, Tyler, Brock, Wyatt, Isaac, and Taya Hollingsworth; Korbin and Alissia Lodge; and Chase, Mackenzie, Lukas, and Soleil Devoto; 4 sisters Wilda (Wesley) Kooker of Altoona, Ramona Korbel of Madrid, Iowa, Glenda Nehring of Slater and Verna Hodges of Des Moines; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held on Thursday afternoon, September 11th at 1:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Boone with Pastor Luis Martinez officiating.
Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery north of Madrid, Iowa.
Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Wednesday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Thursday morning at the Evangelical Free Church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
The family will be at the Stark-Welin Chapel on Wednesday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. to greet friends.
Memorials may be given to the Evangelical Free Church in Boone.
