James "Jim" W. Bridges, age 80, of 1110 S. Marshall Street, passed on surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, September 24, 2008, at the Boone County Hospital. His body has been cremated. Memorial services are Saturday, September 27, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Phil Webb officiating. Burial of his cremains will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council.
Jim was born in Tama, Iowa, on June 11, 1928, the son of Homer and Nellie (Patterson) Bridges. He graduated from Boone High School in 1946, Boone Junior College in 1951, and the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1953. Jim served with the United States Army during World War II and was involved with the occupation of Japan. On February 21, 1950, he married Marilyn Clark in Kansas City, Kansas. Jim was employed by Redeker's Furniture from 1958 to 1990, when he retired as assistant manager.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years where he served on various church committees, the Methodist Men, Boone Garden Club, the American Legion #56, and in earlier years, was a member of the Boone Jaycees. Jim enjoyed woodworking, golf, baking bread and rolls, gardening, and doing magic tricks for his grandchildren. He also liked to read nonfiction, do word puzzles, play the harmonica, play Santa, and he collected antique thermometers. Jim especially enjoyed family activities.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two granddaughters, Jessica and Angela Roe, three brothers, John, Junior, and Richard Bridges, and three sisters, Jeanette Musselman, Mary Jane Bridges, and Helen Ray.
Jim is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Boone; a son, James M. Bridges and wife, Robin of Boone; four daughters, Linda Novotny and husband, Russ of Cedar Rapids, Karen Neely and husband Rick of Boone; Becky Bridges of Boone; and Jean Moeller and husband John of Cedar Rapids; 16 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and a brother, Charles Bridges and wife Jeannine of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Visitation continues Saturday at the Church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church.
