Ferne G. Wane, age 92 of Boone and a resident of the Eastern Star Masonic Home of Boone, passed away, Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at the Eastern Star Masonic Home.
Ferne Was born on May 5, 1916 in Boone County, Iowa, the daughter of John Matthew and Addie Pearl (Dingman) Gates. She attended country school in northern Boone County.
In 1937, Ferne married Martin Anderson, the couple later divorced. During WWII she worked at the Ammunitions Plant in Ankeny. On December 16, 1945, Ferne was married to James Edward Wane at the First United Methodist Church in Boone. After marriage, she and her husband opened Wane's Café in east Boone. The couple operated the café until 1950. She then worked at Fergy's Grocery Store as a clerk as well as other duties in the store for 20 years. She also worked at the North Side Laundromat for several years and part time at the Episcopal Camp and Conference Center northwest of Boone. Ferne retired at the age of 79.
Ferne has been a member of the First United Methodist Church in Boone since the age of 12, and was member of the R.S.V.P. of Boone. Ferne's favorite hobby was cooking and many people and organizations were the recipients of her delicious pies, cakes, and cookies. She also enjoyed sewing, embroidery, growing flowers and raising a garden.
She is survived by her son, Larry Anderson and his companion, Linda Lewis of Las Vegas, Nevada; her daughter, Bev Gutermuth of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; her daughter, Lenora McDonald and husband, Ernest (Buzz) of Arlington Heights, Illinois; her sister, Eva Helquist of Gresham, Oregon; 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 14, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church in Boone. Rev. Andrea Kraushaar will officiate. Following the funeral service, there will be cremation. Burial of the cremated remains will be at a later date in the Squire-Boone Cemetery, southeast of Boone.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 13, at the Walter - Schroeder Funeral Home at Fifth & Story Streets in Boone from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Family will be present at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday at the church from 9:00 a.m. to the time of service.
Memorials may be given to the family, to be used at their discretion.
