Milford Leroy Juhl, age 91, of Boone, passed away November 2, 2008, at Green Hills Health Care Center in Ames.
Milford was born in rural Guthrie County, Iowa on July 21, 1917, the son of Leroy and Edith (Swanson) Juhl. He attended schools in Exira and Nevada, Iowa, and graduated from Oak Park High School in Nevada in 1935. He attended Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska from 1935 to 1937. Milford married Irene Boyd of Boone on November 28, 1942, in Arizona, and after her passing in 1972, he married Arlene Harvey in Des Moines on June 30, 1973.
"Col." Juhl was a longtime Iowa National Guardsman and aviator. In his earlier years in Boone, he had worked for the Boone Dairy and Nystrom Oil. He enlisted in the Army in 1942, was a flight instructor for the Army Air Corps during World War II, and joined the Iowa National Guard in 1947. Col. Juhl was the first Guard pilot from Iowa to attend helicopter pilot school, flying the first helicopter into Iowa for the Iowa Army National Guard in 1954. He was supervisor of the Army National Guard Aircraft Operations in Boone, and was a pilot for the Iowa Governors and State officials from 1948 through 1970. He logged 11,000 flying hours during his 30 year career years as a pilot. He retired January 31, 1972.
Mr. Juhl became vehicle dispatcher for the State of Iowa under Governor Robert D. Ray in 1972, retiring from that position in 1982. He then enjoyed spending winters in Green Valley, Arizona for many years. He was a longtime member of the Boone Airport Commission, the Tall Corn Antique Auto Club in Boone, and had been a member of the Boone Elks, American Legion #56, and other local organizations.
Milford was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene, in 1972, his second wife, Arlene, in 1997, one infant granddaughter, Jennifer, and two sisters, Dorothy and Ruby. He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and James McCullough of Ankeny, Susan and Jack Slauson of Council Bluffs, and Nancy and Paul Jacobsen of Boone; six grandchildren: Dr. Gregory (Darci) McCullough and Dr. Matthew (Brea) McCullough, both of Ankeny, Erica (Jason Goff) Slauson of Issaquah, Washington, Jeff (Alexia) Slauson of St. Louis, Missouri, and Christopher Jacobson and Joel (Courtney) Jacobson, both of Ames; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, and three brothers, including A.D. (Don) Juhl of Boone.
A private family service was held with burial in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.
Memorials may be given to the Boone Area Humane Society in Boone or the Companion Animal Fund at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall in Boone was in charge of arrangements.
