Evelyn Burke, age 76, of Urbandale, and formerly of Boone and Woodward, died January 13, 2009, at the home of her daughter, Jody in Urbandale. A Funeral Mass will be Saturday, January 17, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone with Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Evelyn was born in Rhodes, Iowa, on September 18, 1932, the daughter of Wesley and Martha (Triplett) Jewell. On January 8, 1952, she married Frank Burke in Boone. She and her husband owned Bob's By-lo Grocery in Woodward where she managed the bakery and also owned and operated the Coffee Cup in Woodward. She also ran a day care out of her home for a while. She enjoyed bowling, vegetable and flower gardening, crossword puzzles, yard work, and watching CSI on television. Evelyn also loved to travel. She was a great cook and enjoyed baking every Thursday. Above all, she loved her family's activities and her family always came first.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, Claude Reuting, her husband, a brother, and two sisters. She is survived by three sons, Jim of Boone, Ed and wife, Sheri of Urbandale, and Robert and wife Robin of Perry; two daughters, Jody Runyan and husband Roy of Urbandale and Patty Cantu and husband Jessie of Des Moines; six brothers and sisters; 14 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Friday from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and a Vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m. Visitation continues Saturday at the funeral chapel from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m.
Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
