Beatrice Elizabeth Donaldson David, age, 96, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 in Madison, WI.
She was born in Boone, IA, on September 12, 1912, to Carl Albert and Anna L. Berggren Donaldson. She was married to Carl John David on April 24, 1971, in Madison, WI.
Bea graduated from Boone Junior College in 1931 and from the University of Nebraska in 1933. She received a Masters Degree from Teachers College of Columbia University in 1942 and her PhD in institution management from Iowa State University in 1952. In 1952, she joined the faculty of the foods and nutrition department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Bea retired in 1978 as professor emeritus in the Department of Food Science. She was a past president of the Iowa Dietetic Association, served on the executive Board of the American Dietetic Association as Food Administration Section Chairman and served on the Executive Board of the American Home Economics Association as Chairman of the Institution Administration Section. Bea also served as Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. In 1983, she received the Copher Award, the highest tribute awarded annually to the members of the American Dietetic Association. The College of Home economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln recognized her in 1989 with an outstanding alumnus award.
Bea was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, the Antioch Temple 113 of Daughters of the Nile and Daughters of Demeter. Bea is survived by nephews Dr. John Y. Donaldson of Omaha, and Thomas A. Hillishiem of La Crosse; nieces Mary Ann Gordon of Alliance, Nebraska and Julia Sterzinger of Menomonee Falls; and a sister-in-law, Doris Hillishiem of La Crosse; and very dear friends Peggy and Forrest Jafuta.
Her husband Carl, her two brothers Carl A. and John A. Donaldson, and her niece Nancy L. Hansen preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 8, 2008 at 2:00PM at Oakwood Resurrection Chapel, 6201 Mineral Point Road, Madison, with Reverend Brad Mather officiating. A time for fellowship will take place immediately following the service at Oakwood.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Donaldson Family Fund, University of Nebraska Foundation, the Beatrice Donaldson David fellowship of the American Dietetic Association Foundation, Bethany United Methodist Church, or the Oakwood Foundation.
