The Reverend Arthur E. Brent, 94, Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, Nov. 25 at First United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Herbert G. Shafer, Senior Pastor, officiated. Burial was in the Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant.
Arthur Elias Brent was born Oct. 25, 1914 in Crawfordsville, the son of Eugene Elias and Lillie Mae (Gabriel) Brent. He graduated from Columbus Junction High School in 1934. On Aug. 1, 1943 at his bride's family farm, Arthur was united in marriage to Doris Lucille Cornick.
Arthur worked briefly at the Columbus Canning Factory and as a farm hand before enrolling at Iowa Wesleyan College. He graduated from Iowa Wesleyan in 1942 with a BA in History. He graduated from the Garrett Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, IL in 1944 and was ordained a United Methodist minister in 1947 entering the former South Iowa Conference.
Arthur and Doris served churches in North Liberty-Tiffin, West Burlington/West Hill, Winfield, Ogden, Centerville, Des Moines/Union Park and New London. He retired in 1980. Following his retirement, he was the supply pastor at Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
The Rev. Brent was well-known for establishing relationships with youth and young adults in every community he served. He served on the Conference Education Committee of the United Methodist Church. Arthur was very active in the conference camping program, serving at a time of great expansion in southern Iowa particularly in the acquisition and enlargement of Wesley Woods, Camp Golden Valley, Pictured Rock and Camp Aldersgate. He served many years on the board of the Iowa United Methodist Ministers Service Credit Union for several years in its early history. He also served 22 years on the Conference Board of United Methodist Retirement Homes. The Rev. Brent felt very blessed by having the opportunity to build the United Methodist Church in Ogden and also receiving the Distinguished Service Award from the Ogden Community.
Arthur greatly enjoyed his family and friends, camping, leading family camping caravans around the country, singing around a campfire and homemade ice cream socials. Those thankful for sharing in Art's life include his wife of 65 years, Doris of Mt. Pleasant; three children and their spouses, Mary Alice Eberle (the Rev. Dr. Tom) of Chehalis, WA, Anita Hampton (Mike) of Mt. Pleasant and Richard Brent (Cathy) of Ankeny, IA; a sister and her husband Louesa Busch (Edgar) of Mt. Pleasant. His seven grandchildren are Justin Eberle (Stephen Daily) of Phoenix, AZ, Kendra (Scott) Anderson of Seattle, WA, Lance (Polly) Hampton of Washington, DC, Michal (Steven Caulk) of Iowa City, Beau (Sarah) Hampton of Des Moines, Robyn (Corey) Johnson of Ankeny and BJ (Shannah) Brent of Ramsey, MN. Arthur also has four great grandchildren, Rece and Owen Johnson of Ankeny, and Logan and Mason Brent of Ramsey, MN and several foster grandchildren.
His parents preceded him in death.
Those considering an expression of sympathy in lieu of flowers may direct memorials to Iowa Wesleyan College or the Iowa Conference Board of Camps and Retreats of the United Methodist Church.
Kimsey Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant, was in charge of arrangements.
