Lucile House Jones, 93, passed away on November 27, 2008 at San Diego Hospice. She was born January 4, 1915 to Harvey Daniel House and Linnie May Wright in Jones County, Iowa, and raised in Fraser, Boone County. She began a 30-plus year teaching career in Iowa one-room schools after graduating from Boone High in 1933. She taught at Batton School and boarded with her future sister-in-law Ethel Jones Wirtz.
She obtained her B.A. in Home Economics with a minor in Elementary Education from University of Colorado, Boulder. During World War II she moved to San Diego to teach at Farragut School. She later taught at Grant School and ran an insurance agency in the 1950s. She attended San Diego State University to gain a Master's equivalent in Education and was a Master Teacher at Cabrillo in the 1960s. Mrs. Jones retired in 1972 and remained a member of the California Retired Teachers Association, the San Diego Teachers Association, and the Boone County Historical Society. She was preceded in death by her husband J. Eugene Jones, a Boone County native. She is survived by her daughter Juli Ann Jones and son-in-law Dr. Stephen E. Lockwood of San Diego, her niece Shirley Preston Stanley of Albion, Iowa, other relatives in Iowa and Missouri, and her companion Debra Goudrault.
A memorial mass will be held on December 10 at 1 p.m. at St. Mary Magdalene, 1945 Illion St., San Diego. Donations may be made in her memory to San Diego Hospice, San Diego Hospice Foundation, 4311 Third Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103.
