John H. Snedden, age 83, of 1139 Aldrich Avenue died December 25, 2008, at the Boone County Hospital. A visitation and time of sharing will be Tuesday, December 30, 2008, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. There will be a reading of the obituary and scripture at 7:00 p.m. Following the visitation, his body will be cremated. Burial of his cremains will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at a later date.
John was born in Boone on January 27, 1925, the son of William and Catherine (Smalley) Snedden. He married Verlaine Pearson in Boone on October 16, 1948. She died in 1960. On January 12, 1980, John married Audrey (Peterson) Modeland in Boone. She died in 2007. John served with the United States Army during World War II. He was a brakeman/conductor from 1949 to 1981 for the Fort Dodge, Des Moines and Southern Railway, and the Chicago Northwestern Railway. John retired in 1981. He was a member of the V.F.W. #817, American Legion #56, and the United Transportation Union Alumni Association. He enjoyed remodeling houses, visits to Spirit Lake and working on the lake house, and traveling with Audrey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, infant daughter Mary Helen Snedden, daughter Susan Gustafson, two great grandsons, Layne Russell and Hunter Hilgenberg, and a brother, Dale Snedden. John is survived by a son, John W. Snedden of Boone; three daughters, Linda Modeland and husband Tim, Sandra Russell and husband, Ron, and Nancy Lonergan and husband, Pete, all of Boone; a son-in-law, Wayne Gustafson of Boone; a stepdaughter, Linda Moul and husband John of Boone; 12 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
