Jose Ulises Segovia was born on July 12, 1959 in Primavera, El Transito, San Miguel, El Salvador to parents, Jose Ernest Segovia and Maria Gloria Campos, and died Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at the Boone County Hospital at the age of 49 years, 4 months, and 21 days.
Funeral service was held 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 8, 2008 at the United Methodist Church, in Boxholm, Iowa, the Rev. Dennis Shepherd provided words of comfort. Ulises casket bearers were Richard Farris, Richard Malmquist, Richard Conklin, Jeff Frahm, David Lawton and Christopher Conklin, Ardis Bakley played the piano, the music was Clinging To A Saving Hand, and the congregation sang In the Garden, with the burial in the Dawson Township Cemetery near Paton, Iowa.
Ulises was the oldest of seven children. He completed high school in El Salvador and served 2 1/2 years in the El Salvadorian Army. In 1983, he moved to Washington D.C. and worked for a prominent restaurant. He was united in marriage to Lisa Lynn Lawton in 1987 at Falls Church, VA. They were parents of three children, James Anthony, John Charles, and Leah Isabelle. Ulises and Lisa remained in the D.C. area until they moved to Deltona, Florida in 1989 where he worked for the Sheraton-Orlando North in banquet set-up. He also worked full time at a High School in Florida doing maintenance work. Ulises, Lisa and family came to Boxholm in 2003 to help Lisa's parents during Lila's illness. After moving to the Boxholm area, he became an associate member of the United Methodist Church, and began working at the Gateway Hotel in Ames doing conference services work. His friends at work lovingly called him U. S. One of his hobbies was woodworking, especially making toys for the children. He also loved his motorcycle. Ulises enjoyed his sound system and became very good at "mixing" music. He was preceded in death by his father; brother Ernesto and sister Marisol and mother-in-law Lila Lawton. Ulises is survived by his wife, Lisa Lawton; sons, James and John; daughter, Leah all from Boxholm; mother, Maria Gloria Campos of El Salvador; father-in-law, Dr. James Lawton of Boxholm; sisters, Rosa Aminta Segovia (Francisco), Estela Segovia (David), Isabel Segovia (Chepe), and Gloria Segovia; sister-in-law Lora Farris (Richard) of Boxholm; grandmother-in-law Isabelle Lawton Godwin numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
