Betty (Dorland) Almquist (1924 - 2008)

Betty (Dorland) Almquist, age 84, of 304 South Tama Street, passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2008, at the Evangelical Free Church Home. Her body has been cremated and a Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 28, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 703 Greene Street with Rev. Dr. Richard Harken officiating. Burial will be at the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone at a later date.
Betty was born in rural Hawkeye, Iowa, on January 8, 1924, the daughter of Clifford and Maude (Swales) Dorland. She had been a resident of Boone since 1953. She was employed by Junior Fashions for nineteen years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Nathan Boone Questers, Connoisseur of Art China Painting Club, and served on the board of trustees for the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace from 1979 to 1987. She enjoyed china painting and gardening.
Betty is survived by her husband L.R. "Almy" Almquist of Boone; a daughter, Jan (James) Fuegen of Huxley; a step son, Mark (Debby) Almquist of Estherville; two grandchildren: Jon (Sandy) Petersen and Angela (Shawn) Dose; two step grandchildren: Andy (Annie) Almquist and Amy (Dan) Chatham; two nieces: DeAnn (Ernie) Lehman and Willa Beth (Ron) Nicholes; six great grandchildren; and four great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Jill Carroll Wolf, a sister, Loraine Mills, a niece, Linda Mills Oxley, and a great niece, Cheryl Lehman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family to be directed to the Iowa Chapter of Cystic Fibrosis and the First Presbyterian Church.
Visitation will be held at the Church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The family will be present an hour before the service.
