DEATH OF A PIONEER

Mrs. Patrick Vaughan, one of the earliest settlers of Beaver township, died at her home there on Sunday morning, February 6, at 4:20 o'clock, after an illness of two weeks. Though enfeebled by old age, death was hastened by the dreadful disease, pneumonia, and other complications.

Lina C. Horten was born in Duchess County, New York, July 29, 1838, where she resided with her parents until they moved to Illinois, When about seventeen she joined the Catholic church of which she has always been a devoted and faithful member. At Rockford, Illinois, on April 20, 1857, she was married to Patrick Vaughan, who preceded her to the great beyond a little over a year ago. After a residence of nine years in Illinois, they moved to the then pioneer state of Iowa. Residing a short time in Ogden they then moved to the farm in Beaver township in 11857, where she has spent a period of forty-three years.

The welfare of others was always uppermost in her thoughts, being ready at any time to care for the sick and comfort the sorrowful. Through her many trials and hardships, when the yoke seemed too heavy to bear, she would always say "Trust in God, and all will be well." To them were born six children, two of whom have in infancy preceded them to the grave. The surviving are: J. E. Vaughan, of Davenport, Washington; Mrs. John Cronin of Wood Lake, Nebraska; Mrs. Lewis Savitts and Cecilia Vaughan of Ogden, and August although not her own child has always known her by the name of Mother, who with one sister, Mrs. M. Kelly and one brother, George R. Horten, of Ogden, are left to mourn their loss. Funeral services were held Friday at St. Bridgets church at Grand Junction, and the remains were laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery at that place.

Dearest mother thou hast left us, We they lost most deeply feel;
But 'tis God who hath bereft us, He can all our sorrows heal.
O silent grave to thee we trust This precious part of earthly dust;
Guard it safe, O sacred tomb, Until we, her children, ask for room.
