Sister Alice Marie Lawler 1916-2005

Sister Alice Marie Lawler O.P., 88 died Thursday, Feb. 24, at St. Dominic Villa Nursing Home at Sinsinawa, Wis.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Feb. 28, at Queen of Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa. Burial followed at the Dominican Cemetery.

Sister Alice was born Oct. 3, 1916, at the farm home of her parents, Frank and Marie (Hager) Lawler of rural Ogden.

She attended Beaver Center Country School from Kindergarten through Eighth grade.

She graduated from Ogden High School in 1934, with a Normal Training Certificate.

She taught in rural schools and attended college in Cedar Falls, now known as UNI for three summers.

She attended college the 38-39 school year, graduating in 1939 with a two-year teaching certificate.

She was an elementary teacher in Iowa and Illinois Schools for many years.

She was received into the Dominican Order Feb. 2, 1948, and professed her first vows Feb. 3, 1949.

As a Dominican Sister, she taught at Rockwell, Rockford, Ill., Imogene, Omaha and Wheat Ridge, Col. While at Wheat Ridge, she retired at age 72, serving as a volunteer at her church, school and a nursing home.

She returned in 1998 to live at the Dominican Motherhouse and Villa at Sinsinawa.

Survivors include her brother James and his wife Jeanne of Sturgis, S.D.; her sister Pauline and her husband Robert Uthe of Boone; sister-in-law Bernardine Gorman of Ogden; brother-in-law Melvin Wang and his wife, Nina, of Greenbush, Minn.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and the Dominican Sisters who shared her life.

She was preceded in death by her brother Joseph and sister Martha.
