Thomas E. "Tom" Garland 1928-2006

Thomas E. "Tom" Garland, age 77, of Cedar Rapids, and formerly of Boone, went to spend his eternal life with the Lord on April 18, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness. His body has been cremated and a Memorial Service will be Monday, April 24, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone with Rev. Terry Rassmussen officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council. Friends may call Monday at the funeral chapel from 1:00 p.m. to the time of service.

Tom leaves his loving family, his wife, Vicki, and grandson, Jason; two sons, Robert Garland and wife, Julie, and their son, Brandon, and J. Ryan Garland and his son, Mason, all of Cedar Rapids; four daughters, Judy Garland of Bealeton, VA, Kathleen Fish and husband, Jeff, and their daughter, Erin and son, Jonathon of Los Angeles, CA, Rhonda Skadsem and husband, Chuck, of Thief River Falls, MN, and Mitzi Lewis and husband, Steve, of Ames and their son, Tyler and daughter, Becca; a sister, Rosemary Sorenson Fleming of Boone; and several nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Barb, and son, Michael, and four brothers, James, Lawrence, Robert, and Dean.

Tom was born June 21, 1928, in Boone, the son of Dennis and Hazel (Brixey) Garland. He served with the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954, during the Korean Conflict. He worked for Collins Radio as a Radio Technician. Tom married Vicki Reed, February 2, 1973, in Marshalltown. He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church and the American Legion in Cedar Rapids.

Tom was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a friend to all. He will be greatly missed by all.

Memorials may be given to St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
