Thomas Wetteland 1920-2005

Arthur Thomas Tom Wetteland, age 85, of 1921 Tama Street, died on October 14, 2005, at the Boone County Hospital. Funeral services will be Friday, October 21, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall with Pastor David Guilford and Rev. Paul Fraser officiating. Graveside services and burial with full military honors will be Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Ames Municipal Cemetery in Ames.

Tom was born in Ames on February 6, 1920, the son of Sanford and Pearl (Moore) Wetteland. He graduated from Ames High School in 1938. He shortly attended Iowa State University and graduated from watchmaking school in Kansas City in 1945. Tom served with the United States Coast Guard during World War II as a Motor Machinists Mate. He served in New Guinea and the Philippines. On November 23, 1947, he married Josephine Terhune in Cedar Rapids.

In earlier years, Tom was a jeweler for 20 years and the couple lived in Cedar Rapids and Jewell. The couple moved to Boone in 1965 and Tom was employed at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames as a maintenance worker on autoclaves and small equipment. He retired in 1987.

He was a member of Central Christian Church in Boone, the Masons, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Cedar Rapids, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He enjoyed fishing in Canada, gardening, and scroll and woodworking making extraordinary clocks and model replicas.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Mark. He is survived by his wife, Josephine (Jo) of Boone; two daughters, Hollie Wetteland of Magnolia, Texas, and Sondra Guilford and husband, David of Billings, Montana; two brothers, Stanley Wetteland and wife, Helen of West Des Moines, and Jerry Wetteland of Burnsville, Minnesota; two sisters, Connie Trueblood of Salina, Kansas, and Sigrid Spaeth and husband, Mark of Loveland, Colorado; a sister-in-law, Beulah Wetteland of Boone; five grandsons, Seth, Shem, Isaac, Israel, and Judah Guilford.

Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel on Thursday from noon until 9 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation continues Friday at the funeral chapel from 8 a.m. until service time.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Central Iowa-Boone Chapter.
