Virginia Mae Askvig, 88, Boone and the Evangelical Free Church Home of Boone, died Thursday, May 5, 2005, at the Evangelical Free Church Home.

Askvig was born February 5, 1917, in Mason City to Burton H. and Nora Hienold Bryson. She attended school at Fraser and graduated from Boone High School in 1935. She then attended Junior College in Boone and graduated in 1937.

She was married to Bert A. Askvig on June 1, 1941, in Missouri. She was a homemaker.

She lived in Montana for while her husband was stationed in the U.S. Army. After her husband was discharged from the Army, the couple moved back to Boone.

She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church of Boone and was active in her church, serving as a Sunday school and Awanas teacher.

She was active in politics and was a member and past president of the Boone Women's Club. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxillary.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1992; her brother, Clifford; and her sister, Lucille Friar.

She is survived by her son, Dennis Askvig and his wife Lynne, Alexandria, Va; son, David Askvig and his wife Kathy, Ankeny; seven grandchildren, one great-grandson and several nieces and nephews,

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at the Evangelical Free Church of Boone with Pastor Steve Gehman officiating.

Visitation will be held on Monday, May 9, at the Schroeder ~ Walter Funeral Home, Fifth and Story Streets of Boone from 4-9 p.m., with the family present to receive friends at the funeral home 6-8 p.m., visitation will continue on Tuesday morning at the funeral home 8-10:30 a.m., then at the church from 11:30 a.m. to the 1:00 p.m. service time.

Burial will be in the Pilot Mound Cemetery, west of Pilot Mound.

Memorials may be given to the Evangelical Free Church or Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace Foundation or the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad.
