Wayne Lester Shafer, 81, formerly of Stratford, died Wednesday at the Ogden Manor. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today (Dec. 20) at Carson Funeral Home in Ogden, with the Rev. Herb Foxworthy officiating. Burial will be at Renner Cemetery near Boxholm. Visitation will also be today from 8 a.m. to time of the service at the funeral home.

He was born Aug. 31, 1922, on a farm southwest of Boxholm, the son of Roy and Kittie (Barker) Shafer. He attended country school in Boone County. He married Arlene Carlson March 1, 1944, in Boxholm. The couple later divorced.

Wayne served with the U.S. Army 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry of the 4th Division from August of 1944 to January of 1946. He was stationed in Germany during World War II and was a decorated veteran, earning three bronze medals and a Purple Heart award. He lived and farmed in the Boxholm and Boone County area. In 1957 he moved south of Stratford and began working as a self-employed carpenter until retiring. After retiring, he began gardening on a large scale, attending farmer's markets in the area. He enjoyed music, dancing and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Bob Shafer and a sister Berneice Hein. Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Johnson of Bedford and Camille and her husband Daniel Wentworth of Chester, N.H.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Viki Shafer of San Diego, Calif., and Kerwyn and Francoise Shafer of Colorado Springs, Colo.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Maxine and Harold Lehman of Paton, Charlene and Cleo Ulrick of Ogden, Geraldine Strand of Alvarodo, Texas, and Judith and Tom Hale of Kingman, Ariz.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Loren and Liz Shafer of Grants Pass, Ore., Allen and Helen Shafer of Anaheim, Calif., and Jim and Ruth Shafer of Boone.

Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family. Carlson Funeral Homes of Ogden is in charge of the arrangements.
