Wilbert J. "Jack" Schwieger, 87, of Fairmont, Minn., died Sunday afternoon, March 20, 2005 at the Fairmont Medical Center, Fairmont. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 24, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fairmont with the Revs. Wade A. Daul and David P. Anderson officiating.

Burial with full military honors by Schwieger-Kahler American Legion Post 522, Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222 and Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 will follow at Fairview Memorial Park in Fairmont.

Mr. Schwieger, the son of Henry and Doris (Harries) Schwieger, was born Aug. 17, 1917, in Fraser Township, Martin County, Minn. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fraser Township. Following his education, he served in World War II in the European Theatre and in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska.

On January 2, 1946 he married Lois Moeller. She died March 29, 1964. On June 23, 1968, he was married to Irene Grabau at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fairmont.

He farmed in Martin County until he retired in 1971 and worked for the Martin County Highway Department and the Sheriff's Water Patrol for Martin County. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fairmont where he held several offices. He was a charter member of the Schwieger-Kahler American Legion Post 522 of Northrop and a member of the Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222 in Fairmont.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Lois; and a daughter, Karen; two granddaughters, Jodi Schwieger and Roberta Mattin and one grandson, Matthew Schwieger; sister, Esther Oliver and brothers, Arthur Schwieger.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Schwieger of Fairmont, Minn.; sons: Kenneth Schwieger and his wife Carol of Cottage Grove, Ore.; Bruce Schwieger and his wife Kathy of Fairmont, Minn.; Keith Schwieger and his wife Lori of Fairmont, Minn. and Jeff Schwieger and his wife Dawn of Shakopee, Minn.: daughter, Wanda Tessaro and her husband Joe of Danville, Calif.; four stepchildren: Marshall Grabau and wife, Jerry of West Des Moines; Melanie Lawson and husband John of Maple Grove, Minn.; Blaine Grabau of Fairmont, Minn. and Bruce Grabau of Bloomington, Minn.; sixteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, Ella Nelson and husband Don of Burnsville, Minn. and one brother, Eldor Schwieger of Annaheim, Calif. and other relatives.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, at Zaharia Family Funeral and Cremation Service in Fairmont and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials are preferred to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the donor's choice.
