James Mikesell Jr. 1926-2002

James Mikesell Jr., 75, of Brainard Street, Boone, died at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines Friday from complications of hernia surgery. He was born Nov. 2, 1926, in Council Bluffs, the son of James and Mae (Martin) Mikesell. He married Evelyn Sparger on Nov. 27, 1949 in Boone.

He graduated from Boone High School in 1945 and then served with the United States Army during World War II. After the war, he attended vocational school at the Carr-Moehl Cabinet Making company in Des Moines. He was a cabinet maker and carpenter from 1953 to 1990 when he retired. In earlier years, he worked for Lippert Building and was a crew member that built the First Baptist Church, American Legion Post #56, and the Boone Memorial Gardens Cemetery Association. His hobbies included his grandchildren and their activities, traveling, boating, hunting and fishing, square dancing, gardening and enjoying his pet dog, Amy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Steven; and one brother, Glenn "Junior" Mikesell. He is survived by his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Deb of Boone and Dennis and Debbie of Clear Lake; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Lee Hook of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren, Paige, Alex and Perry Hook, Amanda, Justin and Jenny Mikesell, and Stacy Thompson and her husband Tim; two sisters, Lillie Swain of Boone, and Helen Gardner and her husband John of Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Dr. Norman Haupt officiating. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. until time of services. Burial will be in the Boone Memorial Gardens. The American Flag will be folded and presented by the Boone Veterans Council.

Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church or the Boone Area Humane Society.

Schroeder Memorial Chapel, Sixth and Marshall streets, was in charge of arrangements.
