Mariam Mitchell, 92, 316 17th St., Boone, died Thursday at Israel Family Hospice House, Ames, of complications from cancer. She was born Aug. 2, 1909 in Boone, the daughter of Calvin and Ethel (Berry) Winter. She married James Kenneth Mitchell June 15, 1944, in Boone.

She attended Franklin Grade School in Boone and graduated from Boone High School in 1927. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls from 1927 to 1929 and received her Normal Certificate to teach. She later attended Drake University in Des Moines and graduated with a degree in education. She taught in the Boone area for 44 years, mainly in the second- and third-grade classrooms. Following her retirement, she continued with her involvement with children and education by serving as the librarian at Page and Bryant schools for five years and by volunteering in the classroom at Franklin School. She was a member of First Baptist Church since 1922 and had taught the same Sunday school class since 1960. She was active in Delta Kappa Gamma and did volunteer work at the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad and at the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace. She received the Governor's "Volunteer of the Year" award for her volunteer efforts and for a number of years contributed articles to the Senior Sounds section of Boone TODAY. Her hobbies included playing dominos and tending to her garden.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in March of 1972; and one brother, Calvin Winter. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Elizbeth Mitchell of Richmond, TX; and two grandchildren, Paul Mitchell of Manhattan, KS and Jennifer Mitchell of Houston, TX.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Norman Haupt officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Memorials may be given to the Delta Kappa Gamma Education Scholarship Fund.

Stark-Welin Funeral Directors of Boone is in charge of arrangements.
