Eugene D. Nelson, 62, a resident of the Ogden Care Center in Ogden and formerly of 317 Tama St., Boone, died Sunday at the care center of the cumulative effects of a stroke suffered two years ago. He was born Oct. 24, 1939, in Iowa City, the son of Arthur C. and Isabelle (Dunlap) Nelson.

He was a graduate of Boone High School and a lifelong resident of Boone. He was a salesperson, glass cutter and window repairman at Nelson's Doo-It Store in Boone and was a crossing guard at First and Story streets. He was a 50-year member of First United Methodist Church, a third generation choir member and a volunteer in the shut-in ministry who recorded and distributed audio tapes of the Sunday services. He was a 31-year member of the Boone Lions Club and was selected Lion of the Year in 1989-90. He was also a volunteer for the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad, serving as a conductor, tour guide or trolley operator. He also contributed many hours restoring cars and working on the tracks. He served as the unofficial historian of the railroad, assembling scrapbooks and video tapes documenting the line's high points and history.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his mother in 1997; two aunts; and two uncles. Survivors include his father of Madrid; one sister and brother-in-law, Kae and Jim Schmickley of Cedar Rapids; two uncles; two aunts; one niece; two nephews; and several grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dean Fullerton officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Friends may call at Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. The family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Visitation continues Thursday at the church from 8:30 a.m. until time of services.

Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church or the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad.

Stark-Welin Funeral Directors of Boone is charge of arrangements.
