Myrtle J. Shaffer, 97, of the Evangelical Free Church Home of Boone, formerly living many years in Des Moines and West Point, Iowa, died on Saturday at the Evangelical Free Church Home. She was born Nov. 28, 1905, in Logansport to C.E. and Jennie Mae (Johnson) Erickson. She married Harold T. Shaffer Aug. 5, 1962, at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Des Moines.

She attended school in Dana and attended business school at the 4 C College in Des Moines for one year.She went to work for Bankers Trust in Des Moines from 1923 to 1948 in the credit department. In 1948 she went to work at Taylors Womens Apparel in Des Moines, working as a credit manager, until 1971 when she retired.

She then moved to Arizona, then moved to West Point in 1993.In 1996 she moved into the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, then moved to the Evangelical Free Church Home in February 1998.

She was past president of the Credit Women's Association, past member of the Lutheran Church of Ankeny and she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, crafts, going for walks and making Teddy bears.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in October 1993 and five brothers, Ralph, Walter, Donald, Raymond and Robert, two sisters Maurine Roe and Dorothy Cairns and one sister-in-law Leona Peterson. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Mary McBride of Luther; one daughter, Edith M. Dawson of San Diego, CA; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; one sister and brother-in-law, Leora and Robert Stumbo of Ogden; three sisters-in-law, Evanelle Erickson of Boone, Leone Erickson of Jefferson, Margaret Hasty of Fort Dodge; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, Fifth and Story streets, Boone, with the Rev. Ray Hoke officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, with family present at the home from 10 a.m. to the time of service.

A memorial has been established by the family to Boone County Transportation in memory of Myrtle J. Shaffer.

The Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, Fifth and Story streets, is in charge of the arrangements.
