Wilbur L. Underwood 1914-2001

Wilbur L. Underwood, 86, formerly of 1704 3rd Street, Boone, died at the Stratford Nursing and Rehab Center due to complications from diabetes. He had been a resident of the Nursing and Rehab Center for a month. He was born October 23, 1914, in Dana, the son of William and Hettie (Orange) Underwood. He married Margaret L. Apple on Nov. 14, 1935, in Clarinda. She passed away in 1988. He married Pauline Judd Lind on March 24, 1990, in Boone.

He was a 1932 graduate of Maxwell High School. He worked in the CC camps at Spring Brook before entering the service. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the Navy in the medical corps while in the Pacific Theater. For 44 years, he managed Berry Seed Company in Boone until his retirement in 1979. He enjoyed camping and being outdoors. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and was a Mason with Mirza Lodge #609 of Pilot Mound.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; five sisters; and six brothers. Survivors include his wife, Pauline, of Stratford; one son, Gene Underwood, and his wife, Gini, of Ames; one step-son, Charles Lind, and his wife, Joyce, of Mexico, Mo.; four step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone, with the Rev. Richard Harken officiating. Burial will be in the Jefferson Cemetery in Jefferson. Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel on Wednesday from 3 until 9 p.m., and on Thursday from 8 a.m. until time of service. The family will be present at the Stark-Welin Chapel on Wednesday evening from 6:30 until 8 p.m.

A charitable organization for memorials will be decided upon at a later date.

Stark-Welin Funeral Directors of Boone is in charge of arrangements.
