Francis Vickery 1924-2002

Francis Vickrey, 78, 203 Division St., Boone, died Sunday at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames of cancer. He was born May 19, 1924, in Vermillion, SD, the son of Frank and Constance (Hanson) Vickrey. He married Gretchen Albright June 28, 1947, in Troy, KS.

He graduated from Boone High School in 1942 and attended Iowa State University. He served with the United States Army during World War II and received a Purple Heart. He was an electrician with Iowa Electric Light & Power. Following his retirement, he worked as a mechanical engineer for Iowa State University for a few years. His hobbies included working on his computer, playing guitar, yard work and riding his bike.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Robert. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Bryon Plummer of Boone and Teresa and Mark Boyd of Liberty, MO; one granddaughter, Jennifer Plummer of Boone; his longtime companion, Ina Lee of Boone; and two nieces of Boone.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Schroeder Memorial Chapel, Sixth and Marshall streets, Boone, with the Rev. Dean Fullerton officiating. Burial with military honors by the Boone Veterans Council will be in Linwood Park Cemetery.

Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel Wednesday from 1 to 9 p.m. The family will be present to receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Visitation continues Thursday at the funeral chapel from 8 a.m. until time of services.

Schroeder Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
