Lu Verne Zunkel, 77, Ogden, died Monday at his home of heart failure. He was born May 24, 1923, in Boone County, the son of Clifford and Marie Elliott Zunkel. He married Beverly Baedke Nov. 25, 1948.
He graduated from Ogden High School in 1941 and in 1944 entered the United States Army, serving with the 90th Infantry Division during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and received the good conduct ribbon, European Theatre Ribbon, two Battle Stars, a Victory Ribbon and a Combat Infantry Badge. He and his wife made their home near Ogden where he farmed until 1969 when he retired because of health reasons. The couple then moved to Ogden and he worked for Bork Hog Buying, Ogden DX and Ogden Oil. He was a member of Community United Methodist Church in Ogden. His hobbies included playing cards and visiting with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife; six daughters and five sons-in-law, Patty and Ken Caldwell of Lebanon, Tenn., Vicki and Steve Harper of Boone, Cindy Kennedy and Brian Iiams of Ogden, Debbie Zunkel of Ogden, Denise and Steve Van Pelt of Ogden, and Deanna and Larry Leichliter of Ogden; 10 grandchildren, Angie and Danny Caldwell, Staci and Kelli Harper, Cory and Heidi Kennedy, Amy and Nicole Van Pelt, Lindsay Leichliter and Heidi Carson; three great-grandchildren, Brittany, Corey and Hanna Carson; one sister, Donna Murken of Gilbert; and one niece.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Community United Methodist Church of Ogden with the Rev. Bob Cook officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Boone.
Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
Carson Funeral Home of Ogden was in charge of arrangements.
