Howard Hoffman 1907-2000

Howard Hoffman, 93, formerly of 715 Prairie Avenue, Boone, died Tuesday at the Evangelical Free Church Home of congestive heart failure. He had been a resident at the home since December of 1996.

He was born on September 30, 1907 the son of Daniel and Lovina (Dyer) Hoffman. On December 26, 1928, he married Marjorie Davis in Boone.

Hoffman farmed south of Boone most of his life until his retirement in the late 1950's. He also worked for the Chicago and Northwest Railroad, was employed as a carpenter, and a truck driver for Nelson Trucking. In the late 1970's, the couple left the farm and moved into town.

After his retirement, he remained active in his church, helped to charter the Senior Citizens Center, and served as a volunteer at the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad. For 10 years, he weaved over 1500 rugs for the Senior Citizens to sell. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Boone, where he served as a deacon, trustee, and on other various committees throughout the years.

He and his wife enjoyed traveling and spent their summers at their cabin in Minn., where Hoffman enjoyed his favorite pastimes of fishing, hunting, and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenyon and Mary Hoffman of State Center, Ia; Dean and Imogene Hoffman of Lubbock, Texas; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held on Friday, Dec. 22, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Boone with Dr. Norman Haupt officiating. Interment will be in Squire Boone Cemetery south of Boone.

Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., and on Friday morning at the church from 8:30 a.m. until time of service. Family will be present at the Stark-Welin Chapel on Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. to greet friends.

Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church or the American Heart Association.

Stark-Welin Funeral Directors in Boone is in charge of arrangements.
