Clifford LeRoy Russell, 81, a resident of Coventry Care Center in Boone, and formerly of 203 Boone St., Boone, died Monday at the care center of heart failure. He was born Jan. 19, 1919, in Boone, the son of George Lester and Audrey (Whalen) Russell. He married Marjorie Elizabeth Ross Sept. 20, 1940, in Bethany, Mo.

He graduated from Boone High School in 1936 and farmed and worked construction for several years in central Iowa. He lived in Ridgeport, Stratford, Burnside, Panora, and Boone. While working construction, he was employed as a truck driver in laying asphalt. In 1970, he began working as a groundskeeper at Iowa State University and continued his employment at Iowa State until retiring in 1984. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in rural Boone. His hobbies included landscaping, reading, playing cards, and going to garage sales. He also enjoyed his pet cat, Tabby.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Orville and LaVerne; and one granddaughter. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Agnes Russell of Boone, Steve and Shirley Russell of Adel, and David and Alana Russell of Boone; one daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Jon Clark of Boone; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lucille Smith of Florida.

Funeral services were held Thursday at Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, 503 Story St., Boone, with the Rev. Lindsay Watkins officiating. Burial was in Bass Point Cemetery north of Boone.

Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
