William "Bill" Sapp 1925-2000

William "Bill" Sapp, 75, 1236 Noble Hills Place, Boone, died Thursday at USA Health Care, Urbandale, of congestive heart failure. He was born April 30, 1925, in Hampton, the son of Herman and Edna (Ott) Sapp. He married Clarice Maland Aug. 22, 1948, in Nevada.

He was a graduate of Nevada High School, where he lettered in baseball, basketball, and football. He later was inducted as a member of the Nevada High School Sports Hall of Fame. He attended Drake University in Des Moines, where he played basketball and baseball. He received his bachelor's degree in education in 1949, and his masters in education in 1952, both from Drake University. Before moving to Boone in 1958, he taught and coached at Hopkinton and Grand Junction schools. He was a science teacher, coach and served as the audio visual director at Boone Community Schools until his retirement in 1990. He started the Boone High baseball program and coached baseball until 1977. During his coaching, his baseball teams won state championships in 1965 and 1967. He was honored as "State Coach of the Year" in 1965 and "District Coach of the Year" in 1971 and 1972. In 1976, he was inducted into the Iowa Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Boone, where he served as an Elder. He founded the Boone Huddle of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in 1970 and remained active in the organization.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother. Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dick and Michelle Sapp of Waukee, and Bob and Frances Sapp of Urbandale; one daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Greg Turner of Overland Park, Kan.; six grandchildren, Jared Sapp of Waukee, Alison Sapp and Liz Sapp of Urbandale, and Brett Turner, Amanda Turner and Andrew Turner, all of Overland Park, Kan.; one brother and sister-in-law, Ben and Sandy Sapp of Norwalk; and one sister, Betty O'Neill of Russellville, Ark.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Richard Harken officiating. Burial with the presentation of the flag by the William F. Ball American Legion Post No. 48 of Nevada will be at 1:30 p.m. today in Nevada Cemetery in Nevada.

Friends may call at First Presbyterian Church today from 8:30 a.m. until time of service.

Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church or the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
