IVYL CARLSON
February 19, 1914 - November 26, 2013
Born in Boone County, IA
Resided in Madrid, IA

Ivyl Carlson, 99, a long-time resident of the Madrid community, passed away Tuesday November 26, 2013.

Funeral services will be held 1 P.M. Saturday November 30, 2013 at Sundberg-Kirkpatrick funeral home in Madrid with visitation from 11:00 A.M. until service time, burial will be in the Hillsdale Cemetery east of Madrid.

Ivyl was born February 19, 1914 near Stratford, IA, the third son of Franklin and Tollie (Swedlund) Carlson. He grew up in the Stratford, Stanhope, Luther and Boone area before moving to Madrid. In 1938 he was united in marriage to Ina Gilliam at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.

In the beginning of his farming career Ivyl worked as a hired man, hand-picking corn for area farmers. With this skill he entered many corn husking competitions in Garden Township, and at district, state and national levels. In 1940 he competed in a state meet near Mitchellville and finished second, moving on to the national competition in Davenport, IA, where he placed third. His greatest achievements came in 1941, when he won the State of Iowa Corn Husking Championship in Hartley, IA, qualifying him for the national meet in Tonica, IL, where he finished third. Hand corn husking competitions were physically demanding, lasting 80 minutes - often under less than ideal weather conditions, including downed corn. Over 100, 000 spectators from across the country attended national meets. 1941 was the last hand corn husking competition Ivyl competed in, due to the start of World War II.

Ivyl is survived by his four children: Marlowe; Ralph (Hilda), McAllen, TX; Ruth (Orville); and Doug (Kristie) Carlson; nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and special friends. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2008, his parents, and three brothers.
