Jerome "Jerry" Patrick Burke, 85, passed from this life on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Boone County Hospital in Boone. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Madrid. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, south of Madrid.
Jerry was born on October 30, 1926 in rural Madrid, Iowa, to Lawrence "Pat" and Josephine Burke. He was a graduate of Madrid High School and an Army veteran of World War II, of which he was very proud. In 1953, Jerry married Shirley in Reno, Nevada, and together they raised four daughters. He retired from Firestone Tire & Rubber Company after 30 years. Jerry was a past Commander of the Madrid V.F.W. Post 5060 and current Commander of the American Legion, as well as a member of Forty and Eight. Most of all, Jerry loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Burke of Madrid; three daughters, Cathy (Dale) Inglett of Billings, MT, Susie (Randy) Green of Vashon Island, WA, and Trish Carlson of Madrid; one son-in-law, Mike Fischer of Madrid; eleven grandchildren, Linda (David) Niebeling, Kevin (Kelly) Inglett, Travis (Veronica) Green, Nathan (Jennifer) Green, B.J. (Jolynne) Carlson, Alicia (Jeremiah) Smith, Steve (Ashley) Neff, Jon (Shania) Neff, Dana (Andy) Kent, Erin Fischer (Rob Owens) and Patrick Fischer; twelve great-grandchildren, Chase Niebeling, Kyra Inglett, Camryn Inglett, Brandon Carlson, Olivia Carlson, Megan Carlson, Samantha Smith, Quintin Smith, Jude Neff, Fiona Kent, Zella Kent and Kolbie Owens; and a host of extended family members and many friends. Jerry was preceded into eternal life by his parents; sister, Mary Burke; brother, Bernard Burke; and daughter, Mary Fischer.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, November 7, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church, where a parish vigil service will begin at 7 p.m.
