Grandma Sturdivant who fell downstairs last week and broke a limb, died last Sunday night and was buried Tuesday in the Luther Cemetery, north of Madrid. The old lady suffered terribly and death was a great relief. She was in her 96th year. A very large concourse of people followed her remains to the cemetery, and the bereaved ones have the sympathy of the entire community.
(Probably from the Madrid, Iowa newspaper)
Fairview cemetery records for Mary:
Birth: 17 Nov 1793
Death: 16 Jun 1889
Married: June 1817 to John L. Sturdivant
(Note by LVD!) The old stones crumbled away and a new gravestone was erected. The new stone is in error and has Mary's death date for John and John's death date for Mary. Other proof of her age is a poem used at the funeral which states "She has reached her four score years and more, . . ."
