Loren Ely, age 74, of 1110 South Marshall Street, died July 7, 2013, at his home.
Funeral services will be Thursday, July 11, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Central Christian Church with Rev. Gary Sneller officiating. Burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery.
Loren Earl Ely was born on February 20, 1939, in Minburn, Iowa, the son of Earl and Evelyn (Huffman) Ely.
The family moved to Boone in 1941 and he graduated from Boone High School in 1957.
On October 21, 1962, Loren married Karen Abbott at the Central Christian Church in Boone.
Loren was employed with Iowa Electric Light & Power in Boone for over 30 years and worked as a substation electrician. He retired in October of 1996.
Loren served with the Iowa National Guard for 10 years.
He was a member of Central Christian Church.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, mushroom hunting, and drag racing.
Loren was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson Jared Ely.
He is survived by his wife Karen of Boone; two daughters Debi Pestotnik and husband Tim of Boone and Lori Walters and husband Jim of Boone; a son Lathen Ely of Boone; 10 grandchildren: Heather (husband Ryan) Aspengren, Cory Pestotnik, and Maggie Pestotnik, all of Boone, Cris Ely of Wayne, Nebraska, Sarah (husband Mark) Benge of Norwalk, Marci Baker of West Des Moines, Rachel (husband Travis) Crooks of Boone, Chelsey Walters of Polk City; and Taria (husband Jeremy) Kline, and Zachery Ely, all of Boone; 10 great-grandchildren: Madelyn Aspengren of Boone; Madiline Benge and Brody Benge of Norwalk, Lilly Cooper of West Des Moines, Kaitlyn, Brynn, and Brea Crooks of Boone, Tyler Walters of Polk City, and Jacob Kline and Conner Kline of Boone; an aunt Irene Crowell of Ogden; former daughter-in-law Theresa Ely of Boone; and brother-in-law Edward (wife Helen) Abbott of Ames.
Loren is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.
Visitation continues at the Church on Thursday after 9 a.m.
