John E. "Scrounge" Long, 54, passed from this life on July 18, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 22, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Madrid. Interment will follow at Lincoln Cemetery, rural Granger, IA.

John was born on September 23, 1958 in Des Moines, IA, to Jack and Carol Long. He was a lifelong resident of Madrid, graduating with the class of 1977. He was a loyal employee to the city of Madrid. John enjoyed gambling, bingo, mushroom hunting, going to garage sales and having a drink with his buddies. He loved his family and friends and enjoyed helping anyone who needed him.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his three daughters, Sadie (Steve) Fuson, Samantha (Jess) Mickle and Heather (Ben) Murry; father, Jack Long; siblings, Laurie Rieck, Mike Long, Alan Long, Melanie Fisher and Scott Long; and ten grandchildren, Devin, Cayden, Jayce and Jaelyn Fuson, Ellie, Hadley, Katelyn and Carlee Mickle, and Alyssa and Brooklyn Murry.

John was preceded in death by his grandparents; mother, Carol; and one brother, David.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, at Iles Funeral Homes, Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Chapel in Madrid. ~ The Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa Sat 20 Jul 2013.
