Robert George Howard, 90, passed away at 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2013, from complications of pneumonia, at his home in Madrid. In agreement with Bob's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, in the Sanborn Memorial Chapel at the Madrid Home, in Madrid. The family will greet friends following the service. A private committal service will take place at Fairview Cemetery, north of Madrid.
He was born on November 15, 1922 to Fred McKinley and Daisy Mabel (Hamman) Howard and lived his entire life in Madrid. After graduating high school in 1941, he joined the U.S. Naval Air Forces. On returning home, he worked at various jobs before owning and operating Howard's Pump Service. In 1949, Bob married Ruth Weaver from Woodward. They had two children, Robert George Jr. and Rachel Ann.
Bob served on the Madrid School Board, belonged to the V.F.W. and the American Legion. In the last few years, he was a dedicated fan of all Madrid High School sports and had done a great deal of volunteering for girls' basketball and volleyball as the time keeper.
Left to love and remember Bob are his wife of 63 years, Ruth; son, Bob of Webster City; daughter, Rachel (Jay) of Grimes; sister, Phyllis Johnson of Madrid; brother, Kenneth Howard of Las Vegas, NV; four grandchildren, Clint, Harmony, Glenna and Valerie; one great-grandchild, Aaliyah and one on the way! He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margene Shearer and Maxine Burton; and three brothers-in-law, Jim Shearer, Ab Burton and Melvin Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made to either the Madrid High School Athletic Department or the Madrid Home.
