Irmgard Magdalene Bertram was born Dec. 9, 1908, in Woodstock, Ill., the daughter of John and Flora (Bollman) Bertram. She was baptized as a child of God Dec. 20, 1908, at St. John's Lutheran Church and confirmed her faith in her Savior in 1923 at Osage (St. John's). She attended grade school in Osage and graduated from Fort Dodge High School in June 1927. She was employed by the telephone company in Fort Dodge.
She married the Rev. Herman M. Zagel June 22, 1930. They served churches at Mille Lacs Lake Isle, Minn.; Royalton, Minn.; Charter Oak and St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Boone, and also served as institutional missionaries at Woodward State Hospital, Clive Prison Farm, Des Moines hospitals and hospitals in Indianapolis. They retired in 1974 to Terre du Lac, Mo. They moved to Story City in 1983. She was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Boone. She belonged to the choir, Ladies Society and Lydia Circle. She was a member of the Story City Literature Club and volunteered at Bethany Manor.
Irmgard died Wednesday, May 18, at Bethany Manor in Story City.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in rural Boone, with the Rev. Bruce Lakamp officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Church Cemetery.
She is survived by three daughters, Marjorie Murken, Dorothy Sproul and Carla Winter; one son, Joel Zagel; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, the Rev. Herman Zagel; and one son, Bruce Zagel.
She was a beautiful Christian lady. Her joy was in serving the Lord, Jesus Christ.
Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday, May 20, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church building fund.
