Mary Ann (Givens) Pepper, age 80, of Boone, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at the Boone County Hospital in Boone. Funeral services will be Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall in Boone with Pastor Paul Fraser officiating. Burial will be in the Gilbert Cemetery in Gilbert. The cremains of Mary's husband, Frank "Dugan" Pepper, who died December 5, 2005, will be interred with her at the time of burial. Friends may call at the funeral chapel on Thursday from noon to 2:00 p.m. where the family will be present after 1:00 p.m.
Mary was born in Boone on June 3, 1928, the daughter of Hugh and Ethel (Reed) Givens. She graduated from Boone High School in 1946. On April 15, 1949, she married Frank "Dugan" Pepper in Boone. Mary and Dugan lived in Gilbert from 1956 to 1984, at which time the couple moved to Boone. Mary attended Bernel's School of Cosmetology in Ames and in earlier years, she was a self employed beautician in Gilbert. She then worked in food service for the Gilbert Community and Boone Schools for 20 years.
Mary was a member of the women's auxiliary of the V.F.W. Francis Steele Post #817. She enjoyed reading, hand quilting, playing Bingo, and fishing on the Des Moines River in the boat with her son Scott and her little dog Peppy Lou. Mary was an avid Cubs fan and was very much into politics and watched the MSNBC and CSPAN channels all day, except during her two soaps.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 2005, and two brothers, Jack and Tom Givens. Mary is survived by her two sons, Frank "Jess" Pepper and wife Penny of Ames and Scott Pepper of Boone; her two daughters, Cathy Pepper and companion Otto Gross of Blue Springs, Missouri and Susan Loonan and husband Joe of Gilbert; a brother, Mike Givens of Boone; a sister, Nancy Manthos of Kennewick, Washington; six grandchildren: Kate Pepper of Mission, Kansas, Sammie Pepper of Iowa City, Michael Netcott, Jeremy Peterson and companion Molly Rose of Iowa City, Shelly Peterson and companion Jack Day of Dexter, and Joe Loonan and wife Amy of Ames; and four great grandchildren: Jacob Thomas Peterson, Grace Ann Peterson, MaKayla Netcott, and Ryan Netcott. Two great grandchildren are due to arrive in September and December.
Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.
