Edna Grasso, age 89, of 1272-216th Drive in Boone, died April 28, 2009, at the Boone County Hospital. Funeral services are Friday, May 1, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall with Rev. Phil Webb officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Edna was born in Stanhope on September 21, 1919, the daughter of Charles and Elmira (Wheeler) Allen. She graduated from Stanhope High School and attended Boone Junior College for two years. She later took nurse's training. Edna married Ivan Grasso on December 20, 1939, in Boone. She owned Daniel Boone Sport Shop in West Boone which she and her husband opened in 1963. Edna enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, sewing, cooking, reading, and collecting miniature animal figurines. She also collected antique dishes and spoons. Edna was a member of the Epworth League at First United Methodist Church in Boone and graduated from Boone Junior College; taught Sunday school and was a 4-H member when she was younger in Stanhope, IA. She also worked for Priebe?s Hatchery in Boone and she typed for Donnelly?s Envelopes in Nevada, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ivan in 1995, three sisters Fern Allen, Bessie Klyng, and Ruby Eyestone. Edna is survived by a son, Gary Grasso and a daughter JoAnn Grasso Hicks, both of Boone; a brother, Charles Allen and wife Marigene of Stanhope; two sisters, Faye Sandvig of Cedar Rapids and Gladys Van Meter of Santa Rosa, California; six grandchildren: Mary Beth Kos and husband Tom of Omaha, Nebraska, David Grasso and wife Angie of Carroll, Diane Hicks and companion Jeffrey Ware of Fullerton, California, Kristine Hesson and husband Ken of Laguna Niguel, California, Sherry Elliott and husband John of Villa Park, California, and John Hicks and wife Dori of Long Beach, California; and ten great grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel on Thursday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Visitation continues Friday from 8:00 a.m. until service time.
Memorials may be given to the Boone Salvation Army.
