Robert 'Bob' Farley, age 87, of 117 South Greene Street, died February 22, 2009, at the Boone County Hospital.
A Funeral Mass will be Friday, February 27, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council.
Bob was born in Boone on January 7, 1922, the son of Simon and Gertrude (Parrish) Farley. He graduated from Boone High School and attended two years at Iowa State University. Bob served with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He armored airplanes and was stationed in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Bob also boxed and played baseball in the Army. On December 29, 1946, Bob married Rosemary Grigsby in Des Moines. Bob was a car and tire dealer. He owned and operated Blank and Farley Used Cars in Des Moines from 1946 to 1950, Bob Farley Nash Motors in Perry from 1950 to 1954, Bob Farley Pontiac and GMC in Boone from 1954 to 1959, Bob Farley Used Cars in Southern California from 1959 to 1968, and Farley Wholesale Tire Company, in Boone from 1969 to the present. He retired February 1, 1987.
Bob was a member of the Iowa Car Dealers Associations, California Car Dealers Associations, Iowa Tire Dealers Association, Boone Chamber of Commerce, Church of the Sacred Heart, Knights of Columbus Leo Council #814, and the American Legion Post #56. Bob enjoyed blarney and a good story, his sports car collection, and spending time with his family and traveling.
He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Rosemary in 2006. Bob is survived by five sons, Pat and wife Connie of St. Charles, Mike and wife Colleen, Tim and wife Mary, Brian, and Kevin and wife Carrie, all of Boone; two daughters, Suzy Riordan and husband Pat of Seattle, Washington and Julie Arndt and husband Tom of Iowa City; 20 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; three brothers, Richard Farley and wife Martha of Lakeland, Florida, Donald Farley of Anaheim, Florida, and Marvin Farley and wife Joy of Mountain Home, Arkansas; two sisters, Marge Murphy of Mountain Home, Arkansas and Joanne Hall of Baltimore, Maryland; and nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Thursday from 1:00 until 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and a Vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m. Visitation continues Friday at the chapel from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.
Memorials may be directed to the family to be used at their discretion.
