James "Jim" K. Sanders, age 66, of 1609 Greene Street, passed away at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames on February 12, 2009. His body has been cremated. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Jim's Life on Monday evening, February 16, 2009, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the V.F.W. Hall at 817 Keeler Street.
Jim was born on October 19, 1942, in Chariton, Iowa, the son of Donald and Mildred (Wright) Sanders. He lived in Chariton until he moved to Boone in 1961. He married Kay Helm on March 3, 1963, in Boone. He served with the Iowa National Guard. Jim retired from the Boone Community Schools after 26 years of service as a custodian. Until his illness, he worked part time for the Boone County Landfill and Pat Clemons Chevrolet. Jim loved hunting, fishing, watching and attending NASCAR races, Minnesota Vikings football, and traveling. Jim was a member of the VFW Francis Steele Post #817, Hunt and Fish Club, American Legion #56, Sportsman's Club, and the N.R.A.
He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and aunts and uncles. Jim is survived by his wife, Kay of Boone; two daughters, Robin Sanders of Oviedo, Florida, and Rishell Myers and husband Michael of Newton; two grandchildren: Nicholas and Elizabeth Myers of Newton; a brother, Hal J. Sanders and wife Joan of Chariton; his mother-in-law, Ruth Helm of Boone; sisters-in-law, Karen Danforth of Loveland, Colorado and LaVonne Christensen and husband Michael of Leesburg, Virginia; a brother-in-law, Mel Helm and wife Cheryl of Tama; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
