Shelley Morris Sherwood, age 70 of Des Moines and formerly of Moingona, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, October 2, 2008 in Des Moines.
Shelley was born on October 3, 1937 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Gus Floyd and Corene Pearl (Pilkington) Sherwood. He attended school in Des Moines.
Shelley was married to Sharon K. Sherwood in June 1962 in Des Moines. The couple later divorced. In the early 1970's he worked with Wonder Bread Company as a delivery truck driver. He then worked at Iowa State University as a truck driver for 13 years until he became disabled to where he couldn't drive. He then worked at Reiman Gardens in Ames for the next 5 years. In 1976 he moved to Moingona to live on his dream acreage.
Shelley painted and did auto body work on cars. He liked to watch NASCAR racing on TV, and to go hunting and fishing. Shelley was becoming blind and he took a course with the blind commission in Des Moines for several months. He learned how to manage being blind through the course. He did woodworking blind folded and made a grandfather clock. He also made a six course meal for his family blind folded, and he enjoyed helping his friends anyway he could.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Floyd, Mike and Jimmy, and one sister, Patricia. Shelley is survived by his daughter, Toni Garreton of Portland, Oregon, his son, Jim Rock of Maxwell, Iowa, his daughter, Kelli R. Elsberry (Alan) of Boone, Iowa, his eight grandchildren, his sister, Joann Hyatt (Don) of West Des Moines, Iowa, his brother, Donnie Sherwood of Des Moines, Iowa, his sister, Joyce Dalton of Des Moines, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at the
Walter ~ Schroeder Funeral Home at Fifth & Story Streets in Boone. Envoy Tim North will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, near Moingona, Iowa.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 6, at the Walter ~ Schroeder Funeral Home at Fifth & Story Streets in Boone from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the family present at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Tuesday at the funeral home from 8:00 a.m. to the time of service.
Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
