Richard "Rich" Nellis, age 63, of 816-15th Street, died at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames on October 8, 2008. A Funeral Mass will be Monday, October 13, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in the Squire Boone Cemetery, south of Boone.
Rich was born in West Bend, Iowa, on November 12, 1944, the son of Peter and Helen (Stattleman) Nellis. He graduated from Spirit Lake High School in 1962 and Estherville Junior College in 1964. Rich married Rita Hausmann on October 24, 1964, in Spirit Lake. Rich was a technician and cable maintenance man for AT&T, Northwestern Bell, U.S. West, and Qwest from June 2, 1969 until January 3, 2007, when he retired. Rich enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping. He also liked grilling, vegetable gardening, camping, and watching sports on television. Rich was an Iowa Hawkeye fan. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and visiting with people. In earlier years, he was a member of the Elks and liked to play cards and pool.
Rich was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Kenneth, and a sister, Judy. He is survived by his wife, Rita of Boone; two daughters, Regina M. Nellis-Becke and her husband, Larry Becke of Waukee and Rayna Nellis of Boone; three grandchildren, Sarah Borkowski and Megan Sandegren both of Boone and Kyla Becke of Waukee; two brothers, Robert Nellis of Milford and Patrick Nellis of Spirit Lake; a sister, Jane Cunningham of Spirit Lake; a brother-in-law, David Hausmann and wife Sheryl of Lampasas, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Nellis of Lakefield, Minnesota, and Kimberley Thomas and husband Mike of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; and nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Sunday from noon until 8:00 p.m. where a Vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m. and the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Visitation continues Monday at the funeral chapel from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m.
Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
