Donald "Don" Rogers, age 72, of 1916 W. First Street Extension in Boone, died Friday, October 24, 2008, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Funeral services are Thursday, October 30, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at the Marion Street United Methodist Church with Pastor James Barnett officiating. Burial will be in the Bass Point Cemetery, north of Boone with military honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council.
Don was born in Kelley, Iowa, on August 28, 1936, the son of David and Edna (Van Pelt) Rogers. He graduated from Boone High School and served with the United States Army from 1959 to 1961. On July 21, 1962, Don married Marian Logue in Ames. He was employed at John Deere in Ankeny from 1950 to 1988 as a welder, retiring in 1988. In earlier years, Don managed and was part owner of a race car. He also owned and piloted a Cessna 150 airplane. Don enjoyed fishing, yard work, welding, vegetable gardening, riding his Indian Chief motorcycle, and working on several tractors he owned. He especially loved attending his grandchildren's sporting events and spending time with his family. Family vacations each year took Don and his family all over the country.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Wayne Rogers. Don is survived by his wife Marian of Boone; a son, William and wife, Gayle Rogers of Boone; four daughters, Tammy Mackowski and husband Dave of West Des Moines, Cindy Spellerberg and husband Larry of Grimes, Donna Stoneburner and husband Dave of Des Moines, and Vickie Wirtz of Polk City; 8 grandchildren: Ryan and Sara Spellerberg, Stephen Rogers, Nicole Mackowski, Joshua and Dillon Phipps, and Austin and Brittney Wirtz; a brother, David Rogers and wife Barbara of Riverside, California; and three sisters, Mary Corson of Boone, Ruth Stumpenhorst and husband Marvin of Ogden, and Faye Grems and husband Marvin of Boone.
Friends may call Wednesday at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Wednesday from noon until 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Visitation continues Thursday at the funeral chapel from 8:00 until 10:00 a.m. and then at the Church from noon until service time.
Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
