Marjorie Mae Leaf, age 80, of Boone and the Evangelical Free Church Home, died Thursday, January 22, 2009, at the Boone County Hospital. Funeral services will be Sunday, January 25, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at the Berean Baptist Church with Dr. T. Reynolds Hall officiating. Burial will be in the South Marion Cemetery, southeast of Stratford. Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Saturday, January 24, 2009, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present. Visitation continues Sunday at the Church from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the 2:00 p.m. service.
Marjorie was born in Yell Township in rural Dayton, on February 10, 1928, the daughter of Roy and Caroline (Long) Long. She graduated from Dayton High School in 1945 and attended night school at Tobin College in Fort Dodge, while working days at S.S. Kresge Co. in Fort Dodge.
Marjorie married John Leaf on November 27, 1955, in Lehigh. The couple made their home on a farm northwest of Boone from 1959 to shortly before John's death in 1994. She and her husband were foster parents to 12 children. In earlier years, Marjorie worked as a cook at the T-Inn, west of Ogden, and then at other cafes and the Ogden school lunch program. She also worked at the Boone Dairy until 1974. From 1974 to 1982, Marjorie operated the Coffee Pot Café in Ogden. She also participated in the Boone and Ames Farmers Markets until 1994. She was a member of the Berean Baptist Church in Boone and AARP. Marjorie enjoyed baking, cooking, fishing, reading, and visiting with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers, Clarence "Shep", Howard "Doc", Herman "Stub", George "Hank", and Duane "Todd" Long; and two sisters, Nettie Dutcher and Hazel Long. Marjorie is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Curt and Judy Leaf of Andover, Minnesota and Craig and Kathy Leaf of Boone; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Charles Hall of Madison, Alabama; 11 grandchildren: Beth, Christina, Courtney, and Megan Leaf of Andover, Minnesota, Justin, Calvin, and Cameron Hall of Madison, Alabama, Patrick Tilley of Ames, and Brandy Summers, L.J. Leaf, and Brittany Buchwald, all of Boone; two great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law, VaDonna Leaf of Webster City, John and Doris Timm of Utica, Minnesota, and Gordon Plahn of Lehigh; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a host of friends.
Memorials may be given to the Evangelical Free Church Home.
