Marvin Gene Roorda, 76, a resident of Evangelical Free Church Home of Boone, formerly of Montezuma, Iowa, passed away on December 8, 2008 in Boone.
Marvin was born September 10, 1932 in Richland Township, Jasper County, Iowa, the son of John Jr. and Anna Mae (De Winter) Roorda. He graduated in 1951 from Montezuma High School.
Marvin was a Korean War Veteran. He enlisted in United States Air Force in July 1951 and was based at Sandia Base, Albuquerque, NM. Marvin was honorably discharged in July 1955, with the rank of A1C (Airman 1st Class).
Marvin married Gertrude Louis Schultz in Millersburg, Iowa, in January 1954, the couple resided in Boone, Iowa from 1962-1979. He later married Goldie Eileen Fuller in December 1979 until her death in 2002. He resided in Montezuma from 1979-2007. In 2007 he returned to Boone, Iowa as a resident of Evangelical Free Church Home.
He celebrated his confirmation of faith in February 1963 as a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Boone, Iowa until 1979. He later reaffirmed his faith with Calvary Lutheran Church in Deep River, Iowa in 2002, where he was an active member until 2007. Marvin retired from Warren Transport in Waterloo, and then from Dieomatic, Montezuma as a semi-truck driver. He enjoyed farming, antique tractor restoration and rides, bowling, snow-birding in Arizona, golfing, and being part of a family of 15 siblings. He was a member of the American Legion.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his two wives, and his infant son, Marvin DeWayne Roorda in 1954.
He is survived by his son, Byron ( and Delores) Roorda of Pearland, Texas; his daughter, Kristin (and Christopher) Soder of Boone, Iowa; his son, Noel Roorda of Summerfield, Kansas; his grandchildren, Angela Roorda, Jessica Davison, Jerod Roorda, Laura Soder, and Andrew Soder, and his two great grandchildren. He is also survived by Debbie (and Steve) Day of Ottumwa, Iowa. His 14 surviving siblings include, Harlan Roorda of Prairie City, Iowa, Loren Roorda of Montezuma, Iowa, Norm Roorda and Elmer Roorda, both of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Virgil Roorda of Barnes City, Iowa, Lyle Roorda and Bruce Roorda, both of Montezuma, Iowa, and Joyce Stone of Grinnell, Iowa, Barb Foster of New Sharon, Iowa, Marilyn Cook of Otley, Iowa, Patricia Davis of Oklahoma, Marge Clayton and Sharon Fowler, both of Grinnell, Iowa and Linda Mason of Colorado.
Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 11, 2008 at the United Methodist Church, in Montezuma, Iowa, followed by coffee time at the church. Rev. Dr. Chuck Klink will officiate. Interment will be in the Chester Cemetery in Sully, Iowa. Full Military Honors with Presentation of the U.S. Flag will be conducted at the graveside by the American Legion Post 169 of Montezuma.
Visitation, with the family present, will be held at the church Thursday morning from 9:30 a.m. to the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Hospice of Central Iowa located in Boone or the Evangelical Free Church Home in Boone or the Calvary Lutheran Church in Deep River, Iowa.
