Mrs. Barnevelt Is Laid At Rest
Funeral Services Sunday Of Resident Of Over Half Century
Born in Pella in 1861. She Came Here Over 50 Years Ago - Funeral Sunday
The funeral services for Mrs. John D. Barnevelt, for over 50 years a resident of the Madrid community were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the Sundberg funeral home, with Rev. Frederick Cooper, pastor of the First Christian Church, in charge.
Mrs. Barnevelt had been in poor health for many years. Due to her advanced age and complications her health began to fail rapidly of late and about three weeks ago she was confined to her bed. Since that time very little hope had been held for her recovery and death, although it came as a shock, was not unexpected.
Her demise on Nov. 7, 1940, came at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 26 days.

Born in 1861
The deceased, the daughter of the late Hugh and Elizabeth Pope was born in Pella, Iowa, January 11, 1861, and it was in that community she grew to womanhood.
When at the age of 17, she was married to John D. Barnevelt of Pella, Jun. 28, 1878. For a while they lived at Pella and then in Monroe, and later in Prairie City. From the latter town they came to Madrid about 50 years ago and throughout this half century have identified themselves with this community.
Mr. Barnevelt, immediately upon coming to Madrid opened a barber shop which he operated many years. They then moved to a farm southwest of here, but the couple soon moved back to Madrid, and Mr. Barnevelt again engaged in business.
Three daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Barnevelt. They are Mrs. Nora Hoop and Mrs. Ada Snider, both of Des Moines, and Mrs. Rena Godfrey of Seattle, Wash.
During her residence here Mrs. Barnevelt became a member of the Christian Church in April of 1890, under the pastorship of Rev. W. C. Stockley. She retained her membership up until the time of her death.
Mrs. Barnevelt was bereaved of her husband Nov. 11, 1938.
Besides the daughters mentioned above she leaves to cherish her memory one brother, J. G. Pope of Madrid; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
During the services Mr. and Mrs. Rex Bellinger sang two numbers "One Sweet Solemn Thought" and "God Will Be With You." They were accompanied on the piano by Frances Gibbons. Pallbearers were Adolph Steinhaus, Allen Adams, D. J. Lewis, Clint Wylie, Glenn M. Grout, and B. F. Anderson.
