FUNERAL JOHN D. BARNEVELT
Deceased Laid to Rest Sunday Afternoon at Mt. Hope Cemetery
Had Been Resident of Madrid Community Over Half a Century

The funeral services for John D. Barnevelt, for over half a century a resident of the Madrid community, were held Sunday afternoon from the Christian Church of which the deceased was a member, with Rev. A. H. Bartter, his pastor, in charge. Interment was at Mt. Hope cemetery.
Mr. Barnevelt has not been well for the past few years. He had been under the care of a physician and had been in the hospital at Iowa City in an effort to cure his ailment. However, during the later months he had been unable to work and his health had slowly slipped away. Death came to him Friday, Nov. 11.

Born in Pella, Iowa
Mr. Barnevelt was born in Pella, Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dirk Barnevelt, on May 22, 1859, and passed away at his home in Madrid at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 20 days.

A Barber At 16
Mr. Barnevelt followed barbering as a profession his entire lifetime. He was, at the tender age of nine years, put into the barber shop of his uncle where he did odd jobs and assisted in the work there. Then at the age of 16 became fully acquainted with the barber trade and was able to manage for himself.
During his long residence here he had gained many friends. When coming to the city he went into the barber business and the past few years operated a shop at his home. John was know to his large circle of friends as "Posy", and this was the cheery greeting friends gave him upon the street or in his shop.
He was united in marriage January 26, 1878, to Miss Mary E. Pope of Pella. They set up housekeeping in Pella for a time and later moved to Monroe, Prairie City, and finally to Madrid where they have lived for nearly fifty years.
Three daughters were born in this union, all of them survive their father. They are: Nora Hoop, Ada Snider of Des Moines, and Rena Godfrey of Madrid. There are eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Mr. Barnevelt has been a member of the Star Lodge of AF & AM for nearly 60 years and of the Christian Church since 1894.

Funeral Services
Music was furnished at the funeral services by Phil Reid, Eilah Scott, Dorothy Scots and Mulford Studebaker. Mrs. Irene Morning played the accompaniments. They sang "Asleep in Jesus", "The Old Rugged Cross", and Mrs. Scott and Mr. Reid sang as a duet "The City Foursquare".
The pall bearers were C. V. Grigsby, D. W. Grigsby, Dud Graves, Alvin Graves, C. W. Van Iperen and A. E. Stortman.
