Funeral of H. G. Pope Held Friday Afternoon From the Christian Church.

H. G. Pope, whose death was chronicled in these pages last week, was born in Carlsville, Ill., Aug 1, 1831. At the time of his death which occurred Feb. 6, 1918, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. D. Barnevelt, he was 86 years, 6 months, and 5 days of age.
When about 15 years of age he moved with his parents on a farm south of Knoxville and there grew to manhood. When about 21 years of age he united with the M. E. church and had many times during his illness expressed a desire to go, saying he was ready and waiting.
He was married to Miss Elizabeth McConaughay, April 5, 1855 and to the union were born nine children, six sons and three daughters, all of whom have preceded the father in death but two, Mr. J. D. Barnevelt and Mr. J. G. Pope of Madrid. His wife died Sept. 2, 1872.
Mr. Pope was a veteran of the Civil war, having enlisted Aug. 15,1862, in the 40th regiment of Iowa volunters, and remained in service throughout the balance of the war.
Besides the son and daughter, the deceased is mourned by ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, besides a host of friends.
The funeral services were held from the Christian church Friday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by the pastor Rev. F. E. Rockwell. The pall bearers were old soldier comrades of the deceased. Interment was made in the Mt. Hope cemetery.
