Ruth (Reitz) Thacker, 70, of 1919-22nd Street in Boone and Highland Haven, Texas, died December 27, 2007, in Austin, Texas with her beloved husband and three children by her side.
Gloria was born in Newport, Rhode Island, on November 10, 1937, t1937o Fay and Myrtle (Johnson) Reitz. She met her husband, Stanley Thacker at the roller skating rink in Boone, Iowa and married a few years later on December 19, 1959. Gloria was employed by Iowa State University as a secretary in the athletic department and also in the accounts receivable department for many years and later moved with her husband to Raleigh, North Carolina, where she worked as a secretary at North Carolina State University until her retirement in 1996, at which time the couple moved back to Boone.
Gloria and Stanley raised three beautiful children and spent many years camping, square dancing, and spending winters in their home on Lake LBJ in Texas in her later years.
Gloria was the epitome of courage; even in her battle with cancer, her faith and sense of humor remained uncanny to any other in comparison. The many people whose lives she touched will long remember her down-to-earth humor, her kindness, her hospitality, and her independent feisty spirit. Gloria lived her life in sacrifice displaying the sort of selflessness that we will all strive to achieve---and she did it with such grace. It is in memory of this woman that her husband and family will continue to face the many trials of life in such a way that would make her proud---this in memory of a woman who can never be regarded as anything less that what she was: awesome.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband, Stanley, their children, Ben Thacker and his wife Kim of San Antonio, Texas, Stuart Thacker and his wife Ann of Aberdeen, Maryland; and Dawn Smith and her husband Tom of Boone; grandchildren, Jeremy, Joshua, Layna, Nicholas, Brett, Austin, Kelcie, Jazmine, and Kaitlyn; and great grandchildren Sara, Aaliyah and Madysen. She is also survived by two brothers, Fay Reitz, Jr. and his wife Jan of Camdenton, Missouri and Gary Reitz and his wife Chris of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; sister-in-law Ruby Thacker of Huxley, Iowa; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Funeral services will be Friday, January 4, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone with Rev. Dick Dahle officiating. Burial will be in the Palestine Cemetery, southeast of Huxley. Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Thursday from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Visitation continues Friday at the Church from 9:30 a.m. to service time. Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
