Dixie D. Howell, age 74, of Lake View, Iowa, formerly of Boone, Iowa, passed away on January 14, 2008, at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View with Rev. James Travis officiating. There will be no visitation.
Dixie was born November 10, 1933, in Lovewell, Kansas on her grandparents farm, the daughter of Fay and Marie Faye (Hoag) Smith. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1952. She was married to Robert F. Howell in Topeka, Kansas on April 18, 1952. To this union three children were born: Richard, Sheryl, and David.
Dixie owned and operated a beauty salon, "Dixie's Style Salon" in Boone, Iowa. Upon their retirement they moved to Lake View, where Dixie became a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She was a loving wife and mother, who cherished her grandchildren. She was always busy providing and caring for others and involved in her community and church. She served on the Boone City Council for nine years and was Mayor Pro-tem for two terms. She enjoyed singing and was a member of "Sweet Adelines". Dixie loved to quilt, work in her garden, go fishing, and travel with Bob.
Survivors include her husband, Bob Howell of Lake View; her mother, Faye Kiger of Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake; her children: Richard M. Howell and wife Karen of Boone; Sheryl D. Bergoon of Boone; and David W. Howell of Grimes, IA; four grandchildren: Kristine (Quebin) Jimenez, Wade (Amy) Howell, Akemi Howell, and Levi Howell; four great-grandchildren: Jeramiah, Jericha, and Kaiden Howell, and Adriana Jimenez. Other survivors include her two sisters: Phillis Couch and husband Bill of Topeka, KS and Jackie Branine and husband Allen of Manitou Springs, CO; three brothers: Gilbert "Gib" Burgan and wife Kay of Mound Ridge, KS; Roger Laubaugh of Kansas; and Archie "Roy" Thornton and wife Gracie of Huntsville, AL; sister-in-law Juanita Smith of Waco, TX; and many extended family members.
Dixie was preceded in death by her father, Fay Smith in December of 1982 and her brother, Wilbur "Gene" Smith in January of 2000. Condolences may be left at:
