Robert 'Bob' Atherton, age 90, of 717 West Third Street, died January 25, 2008, at the Boone County Hospital.
Funeral Services will be Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the Central Christian Church with Rev. Paul Fraser officiating. Burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery. Presentation of the American Flag will be conducted by the Boone Veterans Council.
Bob was born on January 25, 1918, in Missouri Valley, Iowa, the son of H. Cecil and Bertha (Bushman) Atherton. He graduated from Boone High School in 1936 and attended Boone Jr. College. He served with the United States Army, in the 711th Engineer Railway Operating Battalion, during World War II. On August 12, 1945, Bob married Elizabeth 'Betty' Anderson in Boone.
He was a locomotive engineer for the Chicago Northwestern Railway for 40 years, retiring in 1980.
Bob was a member of the American Legion #56, V.F.W. #817, Boone Lions Club, National Association Retired Veteran Railroad Employees, a volunteer engineer at the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad, and a 75 year member of Central Christian Church where he served as Board chairman, chairman of the elders and trustees, and a charter member of the Homebuilders. In earlier years, Bob served as president of Boone Babe Ruth and volunteered many hours for the youth of Boone. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, playing his harmonica, crossword puzzles, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David. He is survived by his wife, Betty of Boone; two sons, Bob Atherton and wife Bonnie of Denver, Colorado and Rick Atherton and wife Marcia of Boone; four grandchildren: Chad Atherton and wife Ashley of Emmetsburg, Adam Atherton of Ankeny, and Julie and Ryan Atherton, both of Denver, Colorado; and a great grandson, Caden Atherton. Bob is also survived by two brothers, Thomas of Des Moines and Donald of The Villages, Florida; a sister, Margaret Harvey and husband Bob of Bella Vista, Arkansas; a sister-in-law, Mary Sellers of Boone; seven nieces; three nephews; and four cousins.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Monday from 2:00 until 9:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Visitation continues Tuesday at the Church from 9:00 a.m. until service time.
Memorials may be given to Central Christian Church.
